I’m loving the Fujifilm X100 for image making. It has a great sized sensor in a beautifully well made, retro-styled body.

It does have its issues though. It is sluggish when taking multiple raw photos and its manual focusing is fiddly. They are not really issues that concern my use though, and I feel most of the niggles so far reported can be fixed with a firmware update. For me its good points far outweigh the bad. Great image quality, a hybrid viewfinder, a lovely fast lens and near silent operation to name a few.

That said, for the X100 to be my every day workhorse, the camera I always have by my side, it also to be useable for video blogging. This is my first real test shooting video and although the lens delivers a great quality image, even in low light, a couple of clips appeared to have a buzzing on the audio and then for no reason.. it went. I didn’t do anything to make it go and can’t seem to get it to happen again. Nevertheless, it was weird and I can see myself doing a few more tests before trusting the camera to deliver both stunning video and acceptable audio. Even if just for video blogging.

(I recorded my initial impression of the camera here on audioboo should you want to hear more.)

I found a folder of old recordings. I may start rummaging through them in order to upload some with more context and history.

They remind me of a time when I spent longer in the story. Taking the time to listen & create. I still create long form media but rarely get asked for the more pensive timeless stuff. Most people seem preoccupied with transient disposable media. Something created for SEO. A pretty picture or video, a snatched conversation that may or may not drive someone to click a link or become aware of a brand. We all have to earn a living, but I’m sure there is a way to inject some art, some passion and meaning into all of this.

Before I used apps like Audioboo I used to ‘long-form’ podcast. I recorded over a hundred, 45 of which sat on the Apple store under the title Documentally – ‘Mentally documenting the mind’. I used a handheld mp3 recorder and edited with either Audacity or Garageband. It used to take me ages for some of my more complicated shows. I did it because I enjoyed it. I never did it for the money as I was never paid for audio back then.

Not sure if my podcasts even appear on the Apple store now but having found this folder with clips and snippets, if there’s any interest I may dig out a few more.

This clip is the first half of one of the last podcasts I recorded before switching to Audioboo. It’s dated February 2008 and is a recording made in a street in Jordan while I was working on the video featured below. With the UK involved in yet another war I am again reminded of the victims. The migrants forced to flee in order to find some kind of sanctuary as the powers that be move their chess pieces in another battle for oil.

It’s been five years since I last moved home and the amount of junk/stuff/things that has grown somewhat. All going well, the move date will be around the 15th. Nothing is confirmed in stone yet but we have to go through the motions or it will never get done.

I plan to leave a number of thumb drives stashed around the house when I leave. They will have a text file, an mp3, photos and a video. Stories from the last five years in this 200 year old house. A kind of offline blog post meant for the eyes of the present occupier only. I will try to include some of the previous history as we have quite a lot of information. It would be great if each time people live and leave they would add to the story. Leaving it for the next person who moves in.

We often say “If these walls could speak.” In the future I am sure they will. Perhaps a brick that stores multimedia for future generations. Or simpler still.. Just listen to all the Audioboo’s tagged to the houses GPS location.

I visited Warwick University with Paul Hadley and talked with Professor Alan Chalmers about developments in High Dynamic Range (HDR) video capture. We got to see some incredible footage, as it should be seen, on HDR monitors.

We considered dropping some of the footage into the interview above but it would have really sold the experience short. If you google around you can find some pretty impressive footage not even shot with the 20 f-stops of latitude we got to experience.

I am quite looking forward to seeing how quickly HDR video monitors become affordable and who will make the first off the shelf HDRV camera available to the average video blogger.

And dont worry about being awash with hyper-real over saturated video footage as today, in a room somewhere in Europe, a group of people are sat around deciding on a HDRV standard for all. Let us hope it emulates what the ‘normal’ eye sees and not one on hallucinogens.

Thanks to Professor Alan Chalmers for taking the time to talk to us.

The footage captured above in a noisy lab was the shot on my fresh out of the box Nikon D7000

It has come round so quick this year that I only realised about 11pm. Less than an hour ago. Not a good start I know. Still, I captured this clip a few hours ago and as it’s the only video I shot today and as i don’t have time to shoot something new, I figured it will have to do.

If this is day one and i am already almost flaking out, i don’t think there is much hope for me to last the month. Especially as I have a shedload of actual work on. You know the paid stuff where occasionally I have to wear a shirt? Well ok.. a t-shirt.

Good luck to all those taking part and if you are interested in finding the videos connected to this month just search the hashtag #Vlomo10 on twitter.
