Very cool.
Just when you think Zoom are resting on their laurels they unveil something new.
It finally looks like there is a mobile solution for capturing VR audio on the fly. Designed for video, audio, VR, AR & MR production. The Zoom H3-VR can be powered by two AA batteries for 24 hrs.
The four mic capsules record in ambisonics, binaural & stereo up to 24-Bit / 96 kHz. It can export to 5.1 Surround (via computer)and has on-board ambisonics A-to-B conversion.
There is a 3.5mm output with binaural monitoring and it can record to SDcard or stream via USB. There is also automatic mic position detection so it can be placed upside down, 90 degrees etc and the metadata will tell the file where front and up is. Even the companion app looks well designed.
And the UK price?… £329 inc VAT.
Suddenly there is no excuse for not having immersive sound in your VR projects. Zoom have said they will send one over for me to look at as soon as they’re in the country. I’ll no doubt drop some early experiments into my newsletter but if you have a short VR project we can test it with let me know.
There’s a load more information and examples on Zoom’s site. Make sure you wear headphones when checking out the videos.

Love the look of that! Inspired by your good self, I was taking a look my old and humble Zoom H1 yesterday – apparently it was a firmware update available that will allow it to be used as a USB mic and it’s connectable-uppable to an iPad. Perfect timing for me to find that out – I’ll be playing with it soon!
