I nipped down to the shops on my Micro Pro Carbon Scooter today. I picked it up from Andy at @BornExtreme in Hinckley. It’s one of an unknown number made and at just a smidgen over 2kg is the lightest on the market.
The route I took was about a mile and although I walk the dog every morning and night, eat pretty healthily and ride a bike when I can.. It was bloody knackering.
I must admit, I just so happened to have picked the village school run for my initial outing and may have been pushing it so as not to embarrass myself in front of all the kids scooting alongside their parents.
You may say.. “You were already embarrassing yourself by riding on that thing!”
Well perhaps. But back in 1990 When Wim Ouboter invented the Micro Scooter, he invented it as a commuter vehicle with adults in mind. The reason it folds up is so you can hide it to stop people laughing. In his own words “The only problem was that when I went down town on it, people laughed at me.”
For me I found the kids looked enviously at my wheeled tech and the parents were smiling in a “Oh.. midlife crisis?” kind of way. Ride it fast enough and you have passed the stunned pedestrians by the time they start laughing.
It is great fun though. And there is method to my madness. I intend to take the scooter to SXSW 2011. My accommodation is a couple of miles out and I’m hoping it’s mainly downhill.. both ways.
