In late November 2010 I was challenged by Vodafone to travel from Lands End to John o’Groats with no money or food. I was given five £10 pay-as-you-go FreeBees SIM cards to use as currency and I bartered my way for 900 miles using social media.
I took only my iPhone 4 for photos, video and audio and a macbook air 11″ to edit on the move.
Thanks to @RichardMackney and @Buddhamagnet there was a visual mashup of my trip linked off http://Freebees.me
I made a list here of some of the people who gave lifts and accommodation.
There were so many cool moments that were not captured in video or photos. Some were captured by others..(thanks @SimFin) Some I will do my best to add to the Storify page here..
Thanks to @TristanPoyser for the image of me hitching and there is more info of the Vodafone FreeBees SIM on their site.
Well done! Good thing you beat the weather.
Nice to see all of this put together, after having followed it day to day during the challenge. Congratulations again!
@tontowilliams
Cheers guys. It was good to edit a bit of a summary vid together. Took me a few days to recover.. 🙂
I have enjoyed watching you on this Journey mate.
Looking back, what was the single most important thing you got out of this – personally or otherwise?
Hi Lee, I guess it was the sense of adventure combined with the constant thankfulness that there was a network of support dotted all around the country.
I was totally humbled by everyone’s generosity and was really thankful to have had the road at me feet and my friends watching my back. And my front for that matter. 🙂
What a journey! Really impressed that you did it, in winter too. Crazy!
How did you get from Bristol to Bakewell? The film seems to have skipped that bit…
The pedant in me can’t help pointing out that it is a myth that John O’Groats is the most northerly point on mainland Britain – that is Dunnet Head, a few miles to the west.
But a great deal of respect for completing your journey!
I think i explain that @RugbyInPlume took me from Bristol to @RichardMackney in Derby & then @TristanPoyser picked me up the following day and took me through Bakewell to Sheffield.
I went to Duncansby Head.. The most North Easterly point, ( http://audioboo.fm/boos/225403-stood-at-duncansby-head ) just so i could say i truly travelled from the furthest points on mainland Britain. I don’t remember saying JoG was the most Northerly point. Not sure anyone thinks that.
Hi Chris,
great to see a longer version of your tweet trip, fantastic idea and achievement, great to see so many people willing to help you on the journey.
This could re-ignite the era of the hitch-hiker again!
Well Done!
good work, was following your adventures and really impressed at the variety of people who helped you out. And you didn’t have to use you sleeping bag!
@jayzebra
Hi Jon,
Actually I did use my sleeping bag. I used it when i slept on the couch in Edinburgh but there was a duvet present so i didn’t really need to. It’s a down bag anyway so it didn’t really take up that much space. 🙂
Was it really 5 months ago?! … I thought I should leave a comment as I enjoyed having you over to stay and was glad to help out. Must get together again soon.
It was 5 months ago yes.. and it would not have been the same without your help. cheers man.. 🙂
