Yesterday I got a phone call confirming the go ahead to a project starting the day after tomorrow. The more nervous part of my mind had already decided that this wasn’t happening. Especially as the initial idea was hatched when it was warmer.
A little while ago I was brainstorming with @Dan_Bowsher from the Vodafone Comms team after he asked me what I would do with one of the new Vodafone Freebees Sims. I told him I would digitally busk my way North as far as I could get. He said why not try to get from Lands End to John O’Groats Using nothing but five £10 pay as you go SIMs and what ever tech I could carry.
I foolishly said yes.
I have now got my hands on the final rules for this challenge and am wondering weather or not it can actually be done.
The rules are as follows:
I am allowed to use the Freebees top ups pretty much any way I choose on my way North. Whether that’s using the 500MB of mobile data to arrange a lift through my social networks or the international calls also available via top up to barter for a meal.
I’m also allowed to phone friends and family, but not allowed to use money.. cash or cards. I’m also not allowed to break the law. so no stealing cars or Hobo-ing trains and suchlike.
Sounds simple huh..? :o/
I have always hitchhiked and often used my social networks to assist me in the past, but on those occasions I have had money in my pocket. This for some reason sounds so much more serious. How serious a journey it is, is really down to the people I meet and the people I talk with on the way.
The challenge begins first thing Monday morning when I shall set off from Land’s End. I have until 23:59 on Friday night to reach John O’Groats.
I will obviously be blogging the journey via http://Documental.ly and Vodafone will be commenting and posting content to Their Facebook page and in their Twitter account.
The success of my journey will in many ways depend on my network just as much as my blagging skills. Please comment in any of the mentioned web spaces should you have any tips and tricks, ideas how I can exchange my freebies for the Vodafone Freebees or even better.. If you can offer me a car/boat/train or plane ride for a leg of my as yet unplanned journey.
All my content should be at some point be passing through my twitter account @Documentally and i will be no doubt conversing mainly there.
If through my hobo style, bedraggled sleep deprivation I forget how and why I am doing this.. Please remind me that it was Vodafone who persuaded me to help them launch the Freebees SIMs and that I should be posting my unwashed socks to them if it all goes horribly wrong. ;o)
Good luck 🙂
What have you got yourself in for now! I will be watching and listening to your feeds to keep up to date with this one. Anything I can do? You know my location, if I can help get in touch mate.
Good luck mate, and who knows if you’re passing our neck of the woods, perhaps we can exchange one of those freebees for something – you know where we are 🙂
Thanks @TontoWilliams apreciate the offer of help.. #Freebees
Give me a shout if you need a lift or a meal in the Glasgow/Stirling area. Good luck 🙂

If you are passing Derby, I’d like to exchange some Vodafone Data and a VLOMO10 recording in exchange for a kebab and a roof over your head for the night. Check out today’s VLOMO10 video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vAiWjCcRucWhat you think?
Looks like you have an offer for the midlands. alternative…A bed here in Nottingham, a hot meal, ale and a 13amp multi tower! should you need a way point. Fibre wifi in the office if you pass by in the day. All the best for your travels.
