Today, only 18 hours after ordering on the phone I took delivery of an MTM BlackHawk Special Ops watch in titanium.
I imagine there has never been a complaint of any MTM watch arriving damaged as the case it arrived in was an incredibly sturdy, watertight ballistic ‘seahorse’ case. With the watch already being water resistant to 330Ft and it’s case made from solid titanium, I imagine the post office could well drive off a cliff into a quarry and you would still get to receive a shiny new timepiece.. albeit a day or so late.
As soon as you take the ballistic case out of the cardboard box you feel you have purchased from a company that take great pride in it’s products.
I have only worn it for the last 14 hours so this is more like my first impressions rather than a review. Here is a video of the un-boxing..
[Video company no longer exists so i’m afraid the video is no more. Imagine a funny and informative video unboxing]
I ordered the optional nylon strap as I have never really got on with metal ones. I want a watch that is substantial and solid but not one so heavy as i’m always aware it’s there. Nylon softens with time and really trims the weight of a watch down. Combined with the lightness of the titanium and this timepiece is not too weighty at all. I imagine the steel option is heavy enough to throw through a double glazed window though.
One of the main reasons for me wanting this watch apart from it’s apparent durability and use of hi-tech materials was the innovative addition of four LED’s embedded in the carbon fiber watch face. According to MTM’s website the Special Ops lighting technology was (alledgedly) requested by the Special Forces in their original design specification.
Everyday I carry a torch (flashlight) with me as living in rural British countryside I often find myself in unlit spaces. I may not ever need to signal other members of an elite squad of Special Forces or scour a map in pitch darkness as I calculate the coordinates of an air strike, but just today I found the more than adequate illumination offered by the watch assisted me in plugging an additional HDMI cable in a tricky spot and remove a thorn from my dogs foot on a late walk. This is more than enough for me to be impressed and tomorrow I shall leave the little ARC-P flashlight I wear round my neck in my bedside drawer.
There are two types of light settings, an internal lighting mode uses the three bulbs with a blue diffused light for illuminating the watch face and the external lighting mode uses another set of three extremely powerful led’s emitting a bright orange light.
You may be wondering where all the energy comes from to power these lighting options as the watch is normal size and does not seem to be packed with an oversized battery.
Very cleverly the MTM BlackHawk also employs a unique recharging system. With no need to ever replace the batteries, you just place the watch on the specially designed recharging stand for a few hours every month. You are notified well in advance of the battery running flat by a second hand notification system that discreetly lets you know when power is running low. This is the first electromagnetically charged device I think I have owned but I imagine there will be many more to come.
I was a little concerned by the need to recharge a watch even this infrequently but am never away from home that long so it should not really be a problem and the charging stand isn’t ridiculously oversized so at a push it could be taken with me.
So.. It’s early days as far as my opinion goes and although my first impressions of this watch are good, I do have a habit of destroying watches that do not live up to their reputation and will report anything that may be amiss.
As I write this though I have just let the dog out for a wee in the back garden and was almost as amazed as she was as the watch illuminated the area of the garden she had snuck off to. Not really a life saving use of this great looking piece of hi tech engineering but one of the reasons for it being my choice over the many other hard wearing watches out there.
Already, this watch has liberated me from carrying a separate piece of kit (flashlight) in my everyday list of gadgets and paraphernalia I feel I must carry incase they’re needed.
All I need now is a watch that also incorporates a phone, a Leatherman, a wallet, my keys, a USB drive… …and so on.
[There were some cool videos embedded here but unfortunately Seesmic stopped doing video.. leaving holes in many peoples blogs across the world. A lesson to us all.]
(I have recieved no payment or perks in exchange for writing this review. This is just my honest opinion.)
In the UK this particular model retails at £399 ($499) and the steel version can be bought for £329 ($412). Prices in the US about a third lower.
At time of writing this watch can be purchased from SpecialOpsWatch.co.uk
..and in the US SpecialOpsWatch.com
Update: Four years and two days later and the watch is looking battered and worn but the glass is unscratched and the LEDs work as well as they always have.

As a Man who has never worn a watch in the last 10 years all I can say is .. “Tempted I am !”
At least I now know that if it seems like some sort of black op is going on in the village, it is just you out walking the dog!
Well I was thinking about to order one of those for myself and specially the titanium version of the Black Hawk.
And now I know!!!
I will get it ASAP it looks very good with the ballistic strap!
I was just not to sure about the fact that you have to charge the watch and that someday the battery is going to die!!!
But I guess that in 10 years we will find out and meet again here and talk about it!
Cheers for the video!
Michael
You had to mention Jack Bauer didn’t you…. i’ve managed to put off getting a watch to replace my last one. Annoyingly you’ve found me wanting…
But there is definitely something to be said for that awesome red/orange streak you get when illuminated – Iron Man!
Hi Lee,
Mmmm shiny things.
Well, i am still wearing it everyday and just this weekend It saved me from a hot lap of melted cheese in the cinema by unobtrusively lighting up my nachos and allowing me to safely munch my way through the over priced snack.
Go on.. you know you want one.. 🙂
Documentally,
I’m glad someone finally has a video of the blackhawk on a forum/blog site. I’ve been researching this piece for about two weeks now and you’ve definately psyched me into purchasing one. I also noticed that operatives in a hit t.v. show in the states called “The Unit” are outfitted with blackhawks such as Mr. Bauer. Cheers from your mate across the pond!
First of all let me say that I love your website. I recently saw your first impression of the MTM Black Hawk watch, I am curious as to what your current impression is of the watch. I have been dying to purchase one and was curious know if you have had any major problems with it since you received it. I would also like to know if you would recommend it. I am a EMT-Paramedic as well as a Pilot in and looking for a watch that will hold up better than the ones I have dealt with in the past. I live and work in southwest Florida so i was wondering if you think the watch would possibly be able to stand up to the heat and humidity down here, (85+ degrees F 80%+ humidity.) I realize you are a busy guy and I really do appreciate you taking the time to read this. Thank you very much for posting the first impression on your site it gave me a base to start my new-watch hunt.
Thanks again
Very Sincerely
Andrew
Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your comment, I am getting quite a few emails every week asking similar advice..
I am very glad I went for the model I did as I use the LED’s everyday. Just last night at exactly midnight my whole village had a power cut as I think the local substation was having maintenance. No one was notified and after grabbing my watch from my bedside it proved an invaluable tool as i worked my way round the house checking fuses and appliances etc.
This is the main reason for me to have chosen this particular model.
That said, I have fully submersed it numerous times, it has sat in the sun and gotten so hot I feared to put it on and last week it took a mighty whack on the face from the corner of my car door. All with no ill affects, not even a scratch. I am busy doing all kinds of things but do not lead the heavy going kind of life you may as a pilot and a paramedic and must add that MTM do other watches with even more extreme features.
I stand by my choice to go for the titanium as i hardly notice it’s weight and if i were to wish for any addition it would be for the date to be included in an updated model. (My memory is bad and i have to keep checking my phone.)
Regarding the most important feature.. i.e. the time keeping.. it has been spot on. I initially set it by a radio clock which is set to the atomic clock and i have not noticed any deviation in the time.
Yes I would recommend an MTM watch but would say choose wisely from the models. As soon as i get enough cash together I may purchase a differently spec’d model so I can at least offer comparisons.
Thanks for your interest and good luck with your choice..!
Cheers,
Christian
Got the blackhawk today! I love it!
Hi Christian,
I live in the US and purchased an MTM Predator last September. I opted for the cheaper and much heavier stainless steel model and have loved it. I think I remember reading somewhere that in stainless steel these are the heaviest watcches produced anywhere in the world. That being said I now forget I have it on but have thought about getting the nylon strap and would appreciate an update as to how you have liked the strap. The two main reasons I went with the Predator model was it’s a chronograph and it’s face is more scratch resistant while the Black Hawk is more shatter resistant according to MTM. I can attest to the durability of the watch as I am always banging it on something and it still looks like new. As far as the chronograph goes the face has 3 small dials that will show fractions of a second, seconds and minutes up to an hour. I do sometimes use the timer function but still think the coolest watch function ever is the LED light function of your Black Hawk. Even though I already had my watch I did really enjoy your videos. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work !
Sincerely,
Marty
Hi Marty,
I love the nylon strap. It’s comfortable and light and does not scratch my laptop as I type. 🙂
Thanks for your comment.
Kindest,
Christian
Just received my first 2 MTM watches today. thunderhawk titanium, and a black titanium patriot. good watches for the money. I called today to order a 3rd, the titanium predator, and mistakenly asked if they could throw in a velcro band for free since i dumped 1800+ dollars in 2 days. they said, without hesitation, “NO”, So I said without hesitation, “NO”, cancel my current order. nice watch but the company and leadership or “management” need some fine tuning IMHO. i will send the business of my squadron elswere from now on.
I just ordered 2 watches from you and received them today. I called about 5 minutes ago to order a 3rd watch, and asked if you could throw in a velcro band since i have dropped 1200 bucks and was about to give you another 550 for a titanium predator. the lady on the phone rather rudely said “no” without even contemplating it. thanks for your gratitude for my business. i will make sure to let the guys in my squadron know my experience. i also plan to visit a few forums and post my experience. i knew i should have stuck with Breitling. my order # BTW was #4488. thanks for your support
Hi Jim,
I would be interested in knowing if your experience was UK or US based as I had the opposite experience ordering from the UK.
When i asked for a Velcro strap to be thrown in, although I was initially told the mark-up to be too little to allow this we had a joke about my haggling and the sales person (obviously in a good mood) granted my request.
I do get the feeling that they are asked all the time and would imagine it a great marketing move for the company to throw one in as a bonus. Especially if you are ordering two watches or more. It is a shame they lost your custom.
Thanks for taking the time to comment and sorry you caught the lady on a bad day.
Christian
christian, your watch still going strong ? i just bought one kinda worried about scratching it lol.. expensive toy
Still going strong as my everyday watch.. Smacked it pretty hard right on the glass on the corner of a car door with no damage. Use it as it was designed.. Go jump out of a plane and crawl around in a ditch.. I am pretty sure it will be fine.. 😉
couldnt get the nerve to bring it into work today, i dont want to hurt it.. and i do alot of construction work, its my new baby.. lol
Just took delivery of my Blackhawk Titanium today, I will let you know how it performs in the world of the Police quick response teams…
Hi Documentally,
I thought of buying a MTM Watch myself but i read on some shop site for Germany that it is hard to change the straps.
I would like to know if this is true or if they are exaggerating.
Documentally,
Last Night on a Website of a Online shop selling MTM watches it said that you should ask a professional to change the watch strap.
I would like to know if it’s realy hard to change the strap or if anyone could do it.
btw why had my last comment say the same as this one been deleted?
I purchased a Black Hawk watch last July 07. I hardly ever used the LED functions and within a year they DID NOT WORK. I contacted MTM and they informed me to send it in for repair. I did. I sent it overnight ( USPS with $500.00 insurance to cover the cost if lost ). Cost me a total of $16.00. It took MTM 3 weeks to send back watch to me along with a check $20.00 to cover the postage back to me. They supposely sent it three day ups. Total to get my LEDS fixed $36.00. On top of waiting on a repair that should not of happened within a year’s time they even made money on the postage and took 4 days longer than I sent it to them for less. When I did get my watch back LEDS functional, but one of the watch band screws was busted. Now I have to contacted them again for a pin and screw ( HOW MUCH WILL THIS COST ME NOW) and how long will I have to wait. Customer Service LOUSY. I placed a note in with repair for the owner or rep to contact me via e-mail or phone number, ( nobody ever called ). When I contacted them on why so long for the repair status, young lady informed me they have only one tech. WATCH definately overpriced and will see what they do about the pin and screw .
I was just wondering, when you order one of the special ops watches, do they automatically come with the standard box that was shown in the video? When he was taking it out from the mail? or is that something that you have to order separately?
I have to say, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for your awesome review of this watch. I have been contemplating if I should get this watch and I think you just made up my mind for me.
I am also interested in getting the watch with the ballistic strap so hopefully I will enjoy it bit more.
Thanks for the awesome review. I was hoping if you can take a picture or the watch on you so that I could get the relative size of the watch. I’m contemplating between the Vulture and the Black hawk. Other than the sequence of the LED lightings, the size is a big factor. I know that Blackhawk is 42mm and the Vulture is 47mm and these figures are without the crown.
Any thoughts and any pictures on you would be great.
Thanks for the review and keep up the good work.
James
Hey, nice review of the Blackhawk mate.
I’m currently waiting for delivery of mine but was just wondering what is the model of the Seiko you used to wear? Its a nice looking piece too!
I have placed an ordered for the BLACK WARRIOR TITANIUM for my scuba diving and working in the hectic medical arena here in Portland, OR. During the off days I spend most of my time in the outdoors and participating in a range of physical activities. Hence, a solid watch would compliment my activities greatly.
Having been a former military personnel in the medical arena; I have known many troops on a first name basis and they could care less on a make or model style of watch. Just as long as it was not complicated to use when the moment summoned you to get seriously focus upon the task @ hand.
Light weight, Accurate, Durable, Visually clean face/ without clutter and reasonably price is the goal we favored. -Just the basics… anything else added was just fun and could get in the way (If you know what I mean)!
During the search for the ‘right watch’ for my intended use, I have looked closely @ my true intention as to the purchase of this watch. There are thousands of darn good watches on the market today that I could have chosen, rather than the one mentioned above. So I focused…
Finally, after careful consideration I chose the middle and common ground. With over 6,000 hours diving as a Marine Mammal Keeper and recreational diving; Military Veteran, World Traveler, Archery Hunter, etc. I do believe that this timing devise would accomplish it for me and more.
-Now, if I wanted to wast my funds considerably, I could have gone to the BLACK SEAL, or a watch considerable more expensive and never even accomplished its fine qualities and its intended purpose for its creation; besides being a conversation piece of metal.
If I was a Deep Sea diver using mixed gases and being lowered to depths that exceeds 660′ ..ie. Oil Rig Divers, then I might have considered it a choice in the right direction.
You have stated Right ‘Documentally’ when you said to choose wisely. This is very important when choosing the right tool for the job.
A watch is for time telling period. Anything else is fun tools to have. Although.. fun is, for the most part… FUN!
Now get out there Men/Women and grab your watch! Just remember to keep it simple and remember to know your intention of its purchase.
A.K.A. Nature Boy
nice review of the watch..ive been lookin into ’em for about 2 weeks now and im still trying to decide which model is right for me..i dont do much deep diving but i do go down to the florida keys a good amount and do lots of diving and spear fishing. im also a PFC in the Florida National Gaurd and hurricane season is comin up so we’ll be activated soon..i love the seal model but who the fuck is gonna dive 39,000 ft??? and i dont have 1800$ bucks..i like the warrior and patriot models the best..also how do you think the nylon strap would hold up in lots of water?? i dont want the rubber strap..thats eventually gonna break..let me know..thanks
Excellent review I’m very close to picking up the Blackhawk as well. The one concern I have is the fact that the watch uses mineral crystal as opposed to saphire. Do you have any scratches to the face yet? The other is the black bands reportedly scratch quite easy. What has your experience been with overall wear of the watch. Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.
There is only one word that sums up my choice of watch. Perfect!
Yes.. that is right.. I did not utter its description, but I said it loudly!
Perfect!
The MTM, BLACK WARRIOR TITANIUM is an amazing work of creative art and a GO watch for its initial purpose in my book. As stated previously on this post, it is ideally what I needed in a watch design. Along with the additional purchase of the Velcro strap I was quick to change its band appearance once the Pelican case was unsealed.
This watch is class in every dimension of its design. The bezel is a raised relief allowing one to be able to rotate the face palm down when in dive mode, rather than simply grasping the side mount to rotate the bezel. There is a benefit to this design if you dive often enough. Although, when diving I use a dive computer -this watch is a backup if the electronics fail. Good ole’ mechanics have a way of rigidity way above electronics for reliability when that is all you have to go on.
Impressions on this watch are stellar in just about everything a rugged watch is designed to do in todays modern arena of watch design. The T1 is terrific in that it is T1… must I say more of this fine element?
It amazes me that ‘Man’ could fabricate this element into just about any shape he desires for the purpose of his will…… amazing indeed… It truly makes this watch highly difficult to beat for its class. I will continue to wear the time piece and report back on any further findings as they may arise.
For those that are having a difficult time deciding on a particular design remember to know your intentions for the purpose of a watch. The choice becomes easy when you are honest with your intended use for such a tool. -The result will be Perfect when it arrives…
looketh’ like you gotcha’ a “GeezeagoogoogollyswitzennitzleWHAMBAM&BEYOND” time piece, Eh? !!! *** Bye for now, Charles
I’ve had my MTM Predator for a year now and still love it. I’ve had the steel band on since I’ve received it and it still looks great. As far as the crystal scratching I was concerned with that as well. Apparently the specific personel the Blackhawk was designed for wanted a crystal that wouldn’t crack. They were less concerned with the scratching. For this reason a non tempered crystal was used. I opted to go with the Predator both because of the chronograph function and because it has a tempered crystal which is more scratch resistent (but not as shatter proof as the crystal found in the Blackhawk). I agree totally with the previous poster who said you have to decide what you need from the watch before buying.
Hi!
Just a quick question! I’m also intewrested in the balchhawk or hte vulture, but one thing I’m nost sure of:
is the black coating lasting, or you see any wearing of it ??
Great review!
Cheers
Aurél
After continual daily use since i first blogged about it and more than a few hefty knocks on both the glass and the body, it is showing no signs of wear at all. The nylon strap is more comfortable but to be honest.. it is stil looking too new.. 🙂
As far as the watch, I love it. I used to wear the face inverted like jack Bauer on 24 but I was walking along the sidewalk one night and I chipped a tiny piece on the edge of the turnable dial. I painted over it but the watch is destruction resistant. If you bang it hard enough on a pointy rock you could break the crystal. My velcro band did start to lose its stickiness where I attach it so I called the company. Because I was overseas and I didn’t “Contact them soon enough” they said I would have to buy a new one. I asked him what if I were to have a shoe cobbler put on a new strip of velcro? He said in a nasty british accent “It’ll neavah woork.” Some of those people are rude. Customer service could use a lot of fine tuning. I did go to a shoe cobbler against their advice and for 5 bucks the guy sewed on a new strip of velcro and the band is even better. I told the cobbler the story and the guy said he was just out to make more cash. As far as the scratch, there is a company called “Gun Kote” that has a black paint that they use to cover up scratches on guns. I’m gonna pick up some of that to fill in the scratch. If it is all black the scratch wont show unless someone looks at it under a microscope. Overall it is a great watch, overpriced, but you need to decide if it is right for you.
I”ve have my Black Hawk since Aug “05, I think I paid $400 for it back then, that was about 6 months before Jack Bauer got one, so maybe that is why they are $600 now.
Have used all three different bands, I liked the Kevlar band but I broke the pins that keep the watch on the band too many times. The watch sits a little higher and is more exposed on the Kevlar band and more likely to get hung up on stuff ( I got it caught on a lobster crate) The Watch and band would survive a nuclear blast, but the band pins are run of the mill and Not up the the task.
The rubber band Is tougher than a steel belted radial, but the little loop that keeps the excess band from flopping around chaffed through in about 4 months, if this were made out of Kevlar it would be the perfect band. I’ve settled on the metal band, even though it is heavy. This band has issues as well, I’ve had trouble with the little Screws that hold the links together falling out. I called the company and asked to have a few extra screws ( how much could they cost?) and they refused to send them to me even after I offered to pay for them. They wanted to send them the watch,( I did not feel like being watchless for 6 to 8 weeks) So I have to agree with Jim Chambers post, the customer service is less than impressive. It sound slike I’m bitching alot but I have been happy with the watch the last 3 years, I do miss the fact that it has no date display however.
It sounds
Question, I’m really interested in a Black Hawk Special Ops and would be putting on the velcro strap if i got one, is there much difference in weight between the steel and titanium?
Hi James, Yes. The Titanium is significantly lighter.
Cool, thanks for the reply, i just found the specs buried in the listings online somewhere. Im loathed to buy one at the moment though as it could be too large due to my smallish wrists.
My current watch is 45mm in width from outside edge to outside edge of the bezel and its about 47mm tall from the end of the strap pins at each end.
I cant find the dimensions for the “height” anywhere and this is what bugs me, i think more than 50mm and it would be huge on me, do you happen to know the measurements?
The Black Hawk looks o be the same in width and very nearly 50mm in height.
Cheers for the reply, I’m told i can order one with a 14 day refund/returns policy if its not suitable so looks like i know what im getting now!
Thanks!
I just got my Black Hawk Special Ops Titanium a few days ago. The watch is great in terms of the look and the weight. Titanium definitely is much lighter than the steel.
One shortfall I found is the screw that holds the links together falling out, the screw driver provided seems not to work pretty well with the screws.
Overall, I am very satisfied with this watch.
Try using a kind of thread lock. you can get it from a hardwear store and will lock the screws in good and tight.
You are all wasting your money. These companies talk to one or two ex-special-ops types and then promote their products as being “designed in conjunction with the U.S. Navy SEALs etc.” They are heavy on appearance and B.S. features that lure unknowing folks into paying ridiculous amounts of money for something they don’t need. Having spent 10 years in special operations I can tell you with certainty that the most used watch, across the board from the Teams to Army SF, to the PJ’s is the Casio G-Shock. They last forever and don’t cost a ton, so that when you do end up losing them somehow (things like that happen in the bush), you don’t feel like you’re SOL. I owned one that I had for 15 years with one battery replacement. I finally ended up losing it when I took a beating in 16′ surf during swimmer surf-passage My new one is one of the tough solar watches (3 years) and it cost me a whopping $85 US. Don’t waste your money.
Jason is absolutely correct on this matter foks! A watch is for time telling period… Anything else is just fun tools to have. Although.. fun is, for the most part FUN!
There are a multitude of watches on the market ..you choose the one right for the given task! They all tell time, some better than others. Although like cars… they were designed for one purpose; it is up to you to either choose the Ford brand of make, or rather the Farrari…. you decide. -Just keep in mind that they all get you from point A to point Zed. Some do it better and with a little more excitement!
Documentally.. so far so good on the MTM BLACK WARRIOR TITANIUM. It has so far done exactly what I had expect it to accomplish. Thank you for your site mate! Keep up the good work…
Hi Jason,
I didn’t think for a second that the worlds elite forces (S.A.S. etc) wear a watch saying special forces on it. I can’t see it helping much in a hostage situation.
As regards to B.S. features… I am in deepest darkest Wales right now and and am so thankful for the built in LED’s of my MTM.. It has lit my way down many dark and dangerous paths when a torch was not at hand.
It keeps great time too.. 😉
..And cheers for your kind words Curtis. Although I am not really a Ferrari fan.. (A little over priced for my liking.)
I have friends who wear watches as jewelry and have time pieces costing over £4000 in their collections. They admire the MTM for it’s styling and functionality but do not see it as an investment.. They see it as a reasonably priced tool. And I would have to agree.
Thanks for taking the time to comment guys.
Great site, excellent reviews, my girlfriend won’t let me have my Blackhawk until christmas day!
How often do you find you have to fully charge the watch?
MTM should definately be sending you some free stuff………..I bet Kiefer gets some!!!
All the best!
Hi Dan,
I charge mine about every 6 weeks.. that said, i use it alot and am still yet to see the low battery indicator. They recommend once a month.
I guess it is all down you the kind of use you are going to give it. 🙂
Hello
I google search on your video, I come from China this year, 29-year-old, my Chinese name is Zhao Hongyang, my poor level of English, please forgive me, I would like to ask you this list of the nylon strap is the right to buy additional ? How much does it cost?
Look forward to your reply
Hi Zhao Hongyang, The UK company i was dealing with i think charges about $40 USD at the time.
Kind Regards,
christian
You appeared in the video that nylon strap, you are alone you bought? How many pounds?
Need an advice……I found a very tiny minor scratch on the bezel….I think there must be some paint faded off…any idea of fixing it…..I dont want to send it back to MTM US as it will take a such long time.
Thanks
Does anyone know how these watches compair to the luminox brand? They are also considered a good rugged navy seal watch also The Luminox may not look as cool but they are available at your local watch store.
Hi I have had a Blackhawk Titanium for about a year now and it has been a great watch. Original strap is still in one piece, the watch is still ok, the LED lights are still fine. I have been very pleased with this watch and don’t know what all the moaning is about. How many watches won’t scratch or show wear and tear after a while if you wear them every day. I think some people think that just because it says special ops on the face this watch is bullet proof.
want to purchase the MTM brand, with the larger case and the LED I went to the web site and the the one I was looking at is not available till 2009. Any ideas !
Thanks
I’ve had my Blackhawk for just under a year now, awesome watch! I don’t use the LED lights that often and I’ve managed to have the charge last three months! Also no scratches on the watch face. My only criticism would with the nylon strap. I live in South Africa so the summers are pretty hot. The nylon strap does absorb a lot of sweat and therefore smells a bit after a while. I’ve tried washing it with various soaps but haven’t found anything yet that takes away the smell completely. Looking to the get the rubber strap soon.
I dont care what watch you have (my current is a Sub Rolex) it will scratch, I am just trying to decide between the Warrior SS or all black Warrior. Any advice
Thanks
Roy.. Hi.. and thanks.. now all i can do is smell my strap. 🙂 It’s getting wiffy. I may need to stick it in the washing machine. (I’ll take it off the watch first.)
Has anyone made enquires about replacing the battery should there be a problem. As we all know batteries have life span.
Thanks
Hi mate,
First of all I’d like to say really nice review!
I’m looking for a good quality watch to buy and always been fond of military type watches although I’ve never owned one before hehe.
Being this a military type watch and from your comments above I suppose it can withstand some sort of abuse, nothing extreme.
Could you please let me know if this watch is waterproof and if it can be used for swimming or while taking a bath?
What I want is a long lasting watch and I think this might be it.
Thanks again for your review!
Greetings from Mexico.
Saludos!!!
Hi Benno,
Mine loves salt, fresh and hot water the same.. just make sure you rinse it off after swimming in the sea.
I have had a Black Titanium Silencer for four months now and the watch keeps great time, there are no signs of wear on the watch or band however the small screw that holds the band to the watch has unscrewd and been lost.
I am waiting to find out if I can buy the screws on there own or if I need to buy a new strap, I hope it’s the latter as if I have to buy a new strap for the sake of a 10p screw I will not be quite so happy to recommend the MTM brand to others.
I will post an update as soon as the UK distributor gets back to me
I bought my Black Hawk Titanium in the Netherlands and get a nice discount and the BALLISTIC VELCRO band for free. Great internetshop and a great deal.
I also have a seiko sportura and a suunto advisor. Fore sure nice watches, but my favorite is the Black Hawk. It does’nt matter if those watches are (yes or no) worn by special teams. I like the model so thats why i bought it. Its a lot of money, but i think it’s worth it.
Thanks for everyone’s comments. I’m in the market for a watch that can withstand a pretty good beating. Looking at the MTM site and their watches, a lot of them have Luminous numbers…anything special about this feature? Are they any different than normal watches out there where you have to leave them under light to recharge?
I’m debating whether or not I need one with the tritium tubes or will the luminous numbers work for me. I tend to be in low light environments and the watch definitely will not being seeing too much day light if it needs recharging.
Thanks everyone.
I am the proud owner of a MTM watch. I just so happen to be wearing it now! I have the Seal Squad Divers Watch (12,000 meters water depth rating). I have had my watch for about two years now and I have never been happier. I was in my Wife’s hometown of Ojai California and was acosted by Kiefer Sutherland. He saw my watch and just had to talk to me about it. He was a little jealous that I had the Navy Seals watch, he told me that he wanted that one, but it had been sold out for a while. We had a three hour chat that started cause he recognized my watch! This thing has rarely left my wrist and has been a fathfull companion during my time in Iraq. I have never had a more reliable, durable, kickass watch before in my entire life and I doubt that I ever will! Highly recommended for all you aspiring to be a soldier.
I have owned a Blackhawk Black Steel band for about two years now. I have deployed with this watch to Iraq and many other areas around the world.
Pros: I have been very rough on this watch and have a few minor scratches on it. The pins in the band tend to loosen after time but if you use loctite or thread locker on them they will hold for at least a year. LEDs are bright, VERY bright you will have good illumination when in need. These lights have saved me from stepping on or near some pretty bad stuff.
Cons: After about two years my charge seems to not last as long, about two weeks and my watch would be dead. I called MTM in LA and they told me to send it in and they would fix any problem free of charge, even paid me back for having to ship it out to them. When I called the lady was very helpful and answered all my questions.
Overall this is a great rugged watch that as stood up to all my demands and mistreatment. I would suggest it to anyone who was willing to spend the money on it. I plan on ordering a Vulture but really like my metal band and have been trying to find out if I can fit a Blackhawk band to it……I guess I will find out! Hope this answers some questions for all of you that are looking for a great watch.
Hey Christian,
Well I am still on the watch hunt, still looking for a mil-spec watch that will hold up to future Ambulance runs and whatever else south florida wants to throw at me. I am considering both the Blackhawk and Predator models. I’m just not sure if I want to end up with another piece of gear to charge all the time (phone, laptop, flashlight) my current watch (Citizen, Nighthawk also a great watch) is about ready to retire. Its been about 8 months since I last wrote you and I wanted to check in before I went out and bought an MTM watch. I am curious to know how your blackhawk is holding up, besides the normal wear and tear. I was wondering how the battery is holding up? Do the LED’s or watch itself get hot after alot of light usage? how often do you charge it? and last but not least, you said in your video that you considered going for the Predator, what about the Predator did you like/dislike about that model?
Cheers!
Andrew
Hi Andrew,
Yes it is still my daily watch. I use the light for about 20 seconds a day nothing much so i hardly ever charge it and don’t notice any heat or suchlike. The only reason i would go for another watch right now is to have something with a date window.
I hope this helps, Cheers,
Christian
Well men, it has been roughly six (6) months now since I have purchased the BLACK WARRIOR TITANIUM and needless to say it has performed… quite literally flawless to my needs. The tritium cue’s that this watch gives off is absolutely beautiful to view in low light and in the darkest of environments.
This lighting system is of an amazing feature and has granted me the ease as to quickly glancing @ my wrist effortlessly to engage the local time. The simple date window is equally smooth and to the point. No bells and whistles to press just ..BLAM… there it is… today’s date. Simply perfect little marvel.
The durability has equally shown its mark for strength during bush hunting, weekend camping and coastal salt water fishing; not to mention my work in Orthopaedics. Plaster-of-Paris and 3M Fiberglass has no effect on this watches surface; as a simple wipe off and a quick wash in the sink, with betadine soap, quickly restores this time- piece to its original luster.
Documentally, I believe that the hardened SCRATCH RESISTANT ANTI-REFLECTIVE SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL in watch making is key to producing a very tough watch face. This watch simply looks the same as the first day I removed its body from within the box. There is nothing different, cosmetically speaking, different. The accuracy is almost three tenth of one second off since I dawned it to my wrist nearly six months earlier!
I am Smiling….)
For my active lifestyle this was a highly smart choice in time- piece.. simply put. This watch has no plastic what ever on it. This watch has no filler of any sorts to confuse its purchaser when moments count. As I have stated in previous threads a watch is a tool and it need not be complicated if all you are going to do mostly is tell time.
I will report back in a few weeks and let you know how it performs diving in the South Pacific Ocean when on vacation. This was the primary focal points for this watches purchase. I was in need for a no nonsense dive watch and a price that was reasonable. Like I mentioned earlier.. I will not be diving the ‘Mariana Trench’; rather no deeper than 190′ below the sea.
Simply put, -This watch will hurt you and then ask you ‘Politely’ if you would like another round, or two, or three, or four… When the paramedics scoop up your remains they will see the watch.. pick it up and marvel at it before again hearing for the very last time ‘”Would you like a round, or two…”‘
Thank you Documentally for your post. It has helped me in making a rewarding choice in a fun and actively induced watch design such as the BLACK WARRIOR TITANIUM by MTM.
Yes It actually helps quite a bit, I always use to notice heat coming from the LED on my duty light after prolonged use, but I suppose the situations that the watch LED would be used in wouldn’t come close to the stress and punishment I put my duty light to. A for a date window, I couldn’t agree more of course with all of the LEDs packed into it I’m sure there would be some serious re-engineering to be done. I think I’ll have to give it a try! I’ll write back soon.
Keep up the valuable Work!
Andrew
MY WATCH SUCKS…DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
A black titanium predator was given to me as a gift from my wife. After about 2 weeks of NORMAL wear, two pins unscrewed from the band with one being lost, and the crown screw fell off disabling the watch rendering it useless. After speaking to the non friendly customer service rep (twice), a return UPS label was finally received and the watch was sent back. Approximately 3 to 4 weeks later, these minor problems were “fixed.” Got the watch back, wore it for about 2 weeks on and off, then while shopping with my wife and daughter, the watch band screw that attachs the band to the watchface- feel out and was lost somewhere in Wal Mart – of all places.
I have not been hard on the watch, nor has the watch been mistreated. I’m no “special operator” but do work as a State Police Officer and act as a normal guy. This watch IS NOT what it is advertised to be. I can only imagine the added stress this type of equipment failure would bring to the person who IS hard on the watch and relies heavily on his/her equipment!!!
I’ve owned and used a LUMINOX for about 2.5 years and it has never failed me, AND i can actually tell what time it is in the pitch black…unlike the MTM “Special Ops” watch.
I’m getting ready to send my high speed, low drag, go fast, special operator, over priced, heavy TITANIUM timepiece back to the company where it came from and HOPEFULLY get a refund.
I was a firm believer in “you get what you pay for” but not in this case. Speaking of “case,” the black PLASTIC (not titanium-as mentioned in the review) is the best part of the package but its just too bad for me that I have to send it back with the watch to protect it from further damage.
Good luck in the future to all of you who have an MTM Special Ops watch that actually works!!! AND…more importantly, BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!
About a year ago I ordered a Black Predator with ballistic band. Overall a very cool looking watch. Unfortunately I broke the glass recently when locking up my bike. (the end of the chain hit the glas) the ratcheting bezel fell of a couple of days later which I found quite strange. After putting it back on it did not ratchet any more (moves in both directions now) and I’m not able to get it of again. Fortunately Holland has an importer of these watches so I will send it back for repair. I also ordered the rubber band (style 1, style 2 kind of sucks) I found the ballistic band very cool looking but not all that comfortable. the watch tends so more around a bit.
I am thinking about purchasing the MTM Black Warrior with black steel band. I would like to know if the black coating on the case and band are highly scratch resistant?
I have the Special OPS “Black Hawk” titanium and have had it for about 6 months with no problems to report. The band does tend to scratch and show a little wear. I have only charged it twice and never noticed the two second movement on the second hand, however, the leds would not stay on so I figured it was time to charge.
I also have a Luminox chronograph and love the luminous markers on the watch face they are very bright in low light. So if that’s what you are looking for it’s a great watch choice.
Someone mentioned the question of replacing the battery on the MTM watch and haven’t seen a reply. As far as the Luminox they only give the illumination of the markers 10 years or so on that watch too, what then?
As for customer service it is sad to read reports of poor costumer service from any company. I haven’t dealt with MTM yet knock on wood, however, have had to send back my Luminox for a broken security clasp and was unable to even reach a person to talk with. Had to send it back through the store I purchased it from and it took a couple of months to get back! Rude or unprofessional customer service is unacceptable, especially when you are spending this kind of money. As far as asking or expecting free stuff because you are spending alot of money, go into business for yourself and see how much stuff you give away. They just don’t need to be rude about it.
Overall, love both watches and no complaints for either. Look great and work as intended. Would buy another without hesitation.
I also have a Rolex GMT, have had it for 13 years and worried about scratches and dings for years! If it’s on your wrist it will get dinged and scratched, it adds character and maybe even a story or two.
Oddly enough, here’s a question not yet asked, nor described by MTM.
It looks like the hour and minute hand are equipped with Luminova, or Tritium (or any other agent designed to cause self illumination).
Is the 5 second blue light designed to augment viewing in the dark, or is this the ONLY way to view the watch face in the dark?
Hi Kieran, There is no self illumination of the hands or numbers. i use the blue light to view in complete darkness.
cheers.
Thanks Doc
Hi, I live in Germany, do you know if I can buy this watch without paying taxes in Germany, because here this watches are pretty expensive, so I was thinking in buyin it by internet in UK. Nice watch, but I like the MTM Predatos, is there some review about it. Thank you. You know Euro ir harder than L, so it could cost me almost the same as in US.
I got this watch when I heard Jack Bauer was wearing one for Season 5 of “24”. I also travel internationally, to rough parts of the world. So I thought this rugged looking watch would survive longer than $25.00 Swatch Chrono that died on me after 10 years of faithful service.
The $495 (at that time) price tag was quite high for a no-name no-county watch, but I thought I was paying for the vanity. And vanity it was. It’s a cool toy, but it failed on me. The metal for the case, bezel, crown, bracelet, everything was SO soft that it was full of nicks and chips in a few days. The way Jack Bauer wears this thing, it would have exploded in one episode.
I change locations often, so I adjust the time on the watch on a weekly basis. The screw stem on the case twisted off with the crown, after what… 6 times!? Now I can’t screw the crown back onto the body. And the thing is, anything on the outside of the watch is NOT covered under the warranty. This is probably because MTM can switch out the whole internal mechanism with some ready-made part from their supplier (PRC?) but the outside parts are specially designed in small quantities.
Oh, by all means don’t let me discourage you from purchasing this memorabilia. But beware, this watch is for your display case, not for your wrist.
Hi Celia, i have to say i am very surprised by your experience. I bought the titanium version.. (I imagine that would be the one in 24 too) and it is rock solid. I wear it every day and it is waring really well. I think it is a bit off that MTM won’t repair your winder f.o.c. I would be tempted to email them with a link to your comment and this as i feel they can see this matter is resolved with sone god old fashioned customer service.
Please let me know how you get on.
I will also ‘tweet’ the result on http://www.twitter.com/documentally
still cant decide between blackhawk or patriot…… anyone have both and able to post a review?
decided to go for a Hawk in the end. i found out why alot of peoples pins/screws snap:
1- 1st and 2nd generation of these watches had a lot thinner pins/screws that if over tightened easy snapped or with movement loosened
2- titanium is a sticky metal. i.e. if screws are not powdered or lubed after time they stick in the joint and when you try and open or screw down, or with excessive movement they can snap
the uk company above i spoke to were extremely nice and said if there were any faults (depending on what) it would not have to be sent back to USA but they could fix.
Im waiting for mine to arrive tomorrow – im a plumber and martial arts teacher so im sure this will get put through the paces of abuse – il keep you all posted
Hi, leader of the broken watch team again. So I contacted MTM on the 3rd anniversary of my purchase (out of warranty). but they didn’t ask about my warranty and was willing to take a look at my watch. I sent it to their Los Angeles location and a week later, it’s back, fixed, free of charge. Customer service was good and the repair was prompt. But this makes me wonder if they fixed my watch FOC because they were nice or because this was a material defect. Well, either way, I’m happy that my watch is fixed.
About the MTM watches…there is alot to say! These watches have a very sensitive coating… I own the Black Hawk and the coating started to come off the same day! once received. I sent the watch back and exchanged it for another one and the same thing happen with the Vulture….now i have been waiting for the new vultures about everytime I call in they say Apirl, end of June, August or September…I mean how long does it take to do this dam watch….over all both watches worked for a couple of days after my experience I do not reccomend any of these watches to anyone!!!!!
Hi Matthew, what are you doing with your watch? Mine is still looking awsome.. In fact i would like it to show wear a little more. That said, I did not buy my watch for it to look shiny and new. I bought it to do a job. I have worn it every day and it still looks great. There is a little titanium showing on a couple of corners but as i said.. I wouldn’t mind it showing a little more.. 🙂
I have to agree with Documentally, I’ve had my Black Hawk for a year and a half now, and besides the bezel edge’s coating which is wearing off a tiny bit, the rest of the watch is still looking really good! I must say though, reading all of the above posts, that MTM may have produced a few lemons and agree fully with the users that MTM should cover the repairs of these watches. I don’t know how big MTM is, but maybe they should look into their QA procedures….
I am not sure if I am the only one thinking this, but how is it that a Navy Seals, special ops, etc… etc.. watch needs to be charged once a month? I am guessing that in extreme conditions and situations, a watch that lasts longer would be more sufficient. Let alone having to carry the charger wherever you go. I read a review about someone in Iraq who fried his charger by plugging in into a 240V outlet rendering the watch useless since he cannot buy a charger so easily. I am not in the military but I have been living in the Middle East for a while and was in Kuwait during Desert Storm. On many occasions, electricity would be out for weeks. I am assuming that a Citizen eco-drive or a Seiko Kinetic would be more reliable. Not that I own any of those watches, but it just makes more sense.
I really like this MTM watch but it just does not seem as reliable as they make it sound. Am I wrong?
I’m a full-time paramedic, and have worn a Blackhawk with velcro strap for some time now. so far the watch has easily lived up to MTM’s hype, with no scratches on the crystal or in the coating. (This from a guy that broke a Rolex, which is a watch with a wholly undeserved reputation. But that’s another story!)The Blackhawk keeps typically quartz accurate time, which really isn’t an issue to me, since I set it against an atomic clock weekly, anyway. The 100M water resistance is more than adequate for the considerable time I spend in the water. I initially thought the LED lighting system was pretty gimmicky, and bought the watch for the rechargeability. (Is that a real word?) Well, let me eat those words. The LED lights are probably one of the handiest gadgets I’ve ever owned! It seems like I always need a light, and now I’ve got one. If you’re looking for a rarely seen watch that won’t let you down, the MTM series is a grrat choice!
I agree with Phil on the Luminox. I cannot speak for this watch, but after what I have heard, I am sticking with Luminox. I have had the original Luminox Automatic (the only automatic they made until the Blackbird) and have been more than pleased with it. Luminox watches may not be the most attractive, but in my line of work nothing else has come close. I am an engineer and do some commercial diving work on the side. I have never taken off my Luminox for fear of it getting damaged. I have actually had this watch pinned in chain and equipment before, had it fully caked with river silt, mud and sand, and like my own body, just rinse and go. I have had it for five years now (and mind you this is the model Luminox marketed as their classic luxury model) and have never had a problem with it. It is only rated for 100 meters, but I have never had to work deeper, coastal N.C. and sound waters…Also, the saphire glass face is a must. As long as I have had this watch I have never scratched the watch face surface, yet, the steel watch itself has many dings, etc. The only time the watch face doesn’t shine is when it was caked with mud or the occasional grease or food deposit in which a quick rinse does the trick and it once again looks good as new. I have the model 1602 and if I new at the time that Luminox would cease production on this original 25 jewel ETA automatic workhorse with tritium lighting I would have bought 2 of them before the price sky-rocketed from a mere $400 to now almost $1,000 a piece. Now I have to wonder will this watch outlive me? I suppose I will try titanium next, but I can’t seem to get my first Luminox to die!!! When in doubt, go back to the original and buy a Luminox…
I bought my Black Predator (with ballistic band) about a year ago. (in the Netherlands) Overall I’m very pleased with the look and feel of the watch. It’s quite a conversation peace. The quality of the watch I’m not so sure about. As I said I purchased it about a year ago but after only 4 months the rotating bezzel fell of. After putting it back on it did not click any more and also rotated in both directions. At about the same time I put a crack in the glass while locking up my bike with a chainlock. (It did not hit the watch very hard) Unfortunately I had to wait quite some time to receive my watch back from the Dutch supplier(about three months). witch I found very strange. they did not react to any of my questions via email. After calling the several times I finally got the person responsible for the repairs. He told me the watch was on the top of his list and that it would arrive asap. It had taken so long due to problems with availability of the parts he needed. I finally received my watch about a week ago, and I’ve been wearing it fulltime. I’m still pleased with the look but sceptical about the durability. hopefully I’ll be able to enjoy the watch for a long time, witch I should considering the price I paid.
regards Bob
I bought my Blackhawk Special Ops titanium watch about a year ago. I have been wearing it from time to time. The look and functionality of the watch has been good. However, the paint of the watch is quite easy to get off. I found the paint of the light button on the side has been faded off with no reason. Other than that, I have been very pleased with this watch
I am interested in purchasing one of the BlackHawks. I would like some feedback on the durability of the finish when comparing the steel vs. the titanium models. I understand that the finsish on any “painted” watch will show wear with use, but have read that the finish tends to come off on the titanium models or has this problem been addressed. Also, I’ve noticed that the titanium model does not have the company logo in the 6 o’clock position, is there is reason for this.
I have the black warrior watch. Don’t buy it!!!! I was so excited after reading the good reviews. when I purchased it I thought it was awesome. then I went to the lake. I went swimming with this dive watch and neve got my hair wet. the watch got condesation under the glass and had to be sent back for repairs. a week after getting the repaired watch a trip to the swimming pool did the same thing. customer service sucked also. I say stayu far away if you need something that does what it says.
Crawfishdiver, I’m still haven’t made a frim decision. I’ve read all the postings on this blog, most are very positive. Those like yourself that havew had a poor experience with the Watch and/or customer service have had a really poor experience. Maybe it’s a case of getting a ‘lemon’ or quality control issues.
Hey Art,
You should also think about how your going to use the watch. MTM claims that military personel wear their watches but I would not recommed it. I use it as an everyday watch but I don’t work on an oil rig or in a mine or something. Also, my watch has been returned for repair within a couple of months after buying it. I still wear the watch and I still like it, it looks awesome and feels great on my wrist. hopefully it stays that way 😉
Bob,
I need a watch that i comfortable, accurate and some what robust. I have a part-time business teaching hand to hand Combat (Combatives) to soldiers at the local Army Post. I ;’ve only seen one MTM at the Army post, that on a soldier working in the office of the Special Forces group. These guys tend to wear all differnt kinds of watches: G-shocks, Luminox, mostly GPS enable watches. I don’t think that expecting that a watch that costs $600 should last 10 years, not be plagued with problems. I would also like a metal braclet. Marathon http://www.marathonwatch.com/ makes a really sturdy watch and its less that an MTM – CWC makes the watch issued to the British SAS – http://www.cwcwatch.com/ also less money than a MTM. Maybe MTM should offer fewer gizmos and concentrate on the actual watch.
Hi,
the MTM Black Hawk Titanium (BHT) looks great, but what puzzles me is that there is no display of the date and the price is rather high. So, I hesitate to buy me one (even if I do admit that it does look appealing). In fact, I am looking for a nice watch with a bright flashlight and (preferably) a titanium case and a rechargeable battery (date display would also be great). The MTM BHT has (almost) all the features, but would anyone of you here be aware of other watches of this kind? I have heard of the Swiss Army Night Vision (that seems to have a great flashlight, but has neither a titanium case nor a rechargeable battery), of the Casio G-Shock GW-1310 (which does not seem to have very bright leds) and of the Dakota watch series (but they do not have titanium cases, and I don’t know whether they are of good quality)… Could anyone give me some feedback and/or advice on these watches, or even point out other good ones?
Thanks,
E.
I’ve had the black hawk for almost 4 years and the lack of a date feature does annoy me. It was my fault, I knew that it did not have one, but I missed having it more than I thought. Will not buy another watch without it. Other than that he watch itself has held up well.
Hey Art,
Might I ask what kind of combatives you teach, I’m a Krav Maga enthousiast but always interested in other kinds of selfdefence stuff however, I’m not in the military.
regards,
Bob
Bob, google my business name – Combatives Defensive Tactics International – check out the Gallery. If you send me an email I’ll be glad to answer any of your questions outside of this forum.
I traveled around the world, and I know for a fact not to buy an American watch. Quality is inferior just like an American car you always take it in for repairs
Can anyone comment on the “Vulture”. I’m really interested in purchasing one but its seems to be continually out of stock. They had an automatic reply that said they would notify me when stock became available. That was some months ago. ??
Steve,
Fixed it for ya!
“I traveled around the world, and I know for a fact not to buy an American watch. Quality is inferior just like an American car you always take it in for repairs. Of course watches and cars don’t really mean %&!@*?! when it comes to liberty and freedom. So, let’s just say American “EVERYTHING ELSE” (i.e. healthcare system, national defense, cost of living, choice of cuisine, freedom of choice, etc.) is d. near spot on, Chap! And now we all know why Living American can pretty much enable you to buy anything Swiss, German, Italian, Swede, and oh, yeah, British…from anywhere in the world.
Am I right, Steve?
MTM Seal Xtreme
Ive Had mine for 2years now & im pritty hard on my watches, they take there fair share of abuse & are usally on my wrist 24/7. Ive no complaints this watch is an accurate time piece & very durable. If you want an active rugged watch this brand is for you. It does exactly what it says on the tin!! buy one..
Thanks for your answers… I think I’ll go for a swiss army watch, then.
E.
Is this watch possible to by in anywhere in Denmark?
Hey guys,
Does anybody know the reason why the MTM xtreme ops watch has gone from oil filled and waterproof to 39,000 ft to helium pressure relief valve and water resistant to 3,300ft. E.T.A was April of this year but now it’s not available yet till november. I contacted the company last week and got generic answers. My answer about waterproof vs water resistant was not really answered. They just said its improved. How So??? And the price is going to be the same. Anybody that can help is appreciated.
Before I shed out $1800! I’d pay that for the first one but its almost worth to pay $545.00 for a warrior that has almost exact specs except goes to 660ft.
Chris I just bought the Titanium Black Warrior and I could not be happier. I got tired of waiting for the new “Extreme” then the “Vulture” and I am so Glad THAT I did. THE WARRIOR is light (Titanium) strong and the tritium gas tubes work better than I ever expected. Apart from the delay in the availability of the “Vulture” I found the staff extremly helpful.I asked a lot of questions. They always responded promptly and I never received a generic letter. I bought it from the South African distributor. I have read a lot of whyning but I can’t agree. No complaints from my end at all. I doubt you will ever reach 3,300 feet. ENJOY I don’t believe you can go wrong with MTM.
Mark
ps: Chris the South African distributor at: http://www.specialopswatch.co.za/collection/series.asp?seriesid=3 still have the original version Extreme Ops Seal for sale for R1899 which converted to $ is about $1100. A good price if interested. I am sure they can ship it to you if you are interested .a there e-mail is info@synchronal.co.za Hope this helps.

Anyone know how to get good resale out of a mtm blackhawk? I have had mine for a little over a year and it does have some wear on the band, but I took it to a pawn shop wanting to get at least $150 for it and was only offered $50. I thought these would have a good resale.
I have a predator and have wanted a blackhawk. I might buy it off you. Not sure how to go about it though.
I’m interested also. What state do you live in? Might also try Ebay and Craig’s list
I live in Indiana. I don’t know how to go about it either. I have had it in craigs list and I refuse to use ebay. The only reason I am selling it is because I recently lost my job and need some help until I start getting paid from my new employer, so I am interested in any suggestions on how to sell it. Thanks for all comments.
If you want contact me at martinkay69@aol.com
I want a black hawk or a predator, in titanium. I,m living in Madrid (Spain) and the price is the double than USA. 500$ in USA and 940$ in SPAIN.
How can I buy one from Spain in USA dollar?
Jose, you might try Ebay-USA these watches come up for auction periodiaclly or perhaps having a friend in the USA purchase the desired watch for you and shipping it to in Spain.
nterested in purchasing a pre-owned BlackHawk at a reasonable price. ceasarsparents@aol.com.
i am thinking whether to buy the titanium black predator or the titanium black patriot?????? please help me decide!!!??
I had a hard time choosing between the two as well. I narrowed it down to those because I wanted the chronograph function and I use it a lot for running. I went with the Predator because I prefered the larger link band but you really can’t go wrong either way. I bang the hell out of mine and haven’t had a problem yet. Good luck, it’s one of the more pleasant decisions you’ll have to make.
Interested in purchasing a used metal band black warrior…any out there? email borerb@westinghouse.com
Also interested in purchasing a Blackhawk at a reasonable price. Gave my old one away to a friend who deployed to Afghanistan. Kinda miss my old one. This was BEFORE the whole 24 craze.
email at zeinhander@yahoo.com
I’m looking at a few different models. right now it appears that the vulture would have everything I would want (light modes, recharger, waterproof to 660ft) but it doesn’t have a chronograph and it’s sold out. I was also looking at the patriot, predator, and warrior. and the hawk is always a stand by option, as far as the light modes go. I’m just not a big fan of the reduced depth, just in case of diving. I’m in Iraq right now and I’m also not sure how to get one sent here. anyone have any advice as far as an all-in-1 package? which is the most well-rounded for a decent price? I really don’t want to pay $1000, so….?
unless someone has advice on another brand with a similar style and price, with durability, reliability, and whatnot.
also definitely preferred is some sort of luminous dial, numbers, backlit face, etc so i wouldn’t have to shine a flashlight on it to see
Hello to all from around the world… and especially you “Documentally” for this post. Here I am once more to complete another review, thus far on the -‘BLACK WARRIOR TITANIUM’.
I have posted four readings on this site in regards to the BLACK WARRIOR TITANIUM: One on 6/8/2008, 13/8/2008, 21/9/2008 and on 26/2/2008. In this review I will discuss the over all wearings of this time-piece and some comments about this watch to date.
Please keep in mind that I could care non-the-less on weather you (Our Readers), or for that matter the company,(M.T.M.) might regard on this said review of this most wonderful time piece.
The purpose here is to inform you on its particular performance thus far, ie. the “BLACK WARRIOR TITANIUM,” since its purchase over one year to date. With this said… lets proceed shall we?
First off I do not work for M.T.M. rather; I am a human being that likes to play. Having a time piece of any sorts is a must for me, as I need to tell time.
After some lenghtly reviews of popular watch designs nationally and internationally in the past before M.T.M.’s purchase; the choice was made.
I questioned exactly as to the function of my intended use of a dynamic watch. That simple.
I was honest with my ideal purchase of a watch and the required desire of a time piece to suite my high levels of an active life style. I could have chosen another just as easily; but I chose this one instead.
It would be difficult to say anything negitive about this watch thus far. Unless… those of you who warrent its cultivation by the hands of mere-mortals imperfect… well; it is what it is. -And it is an absolute “Hulk” of a dive watch and so much more to boot!
It is currently on my wrist as I type this page and it looks absolutly Fantastic! -No Joke.
So far it has seen the floors of the Pacific Ocean @ a level depth of 140′ (French Polynesia) and scraped its sandy bottom on many occasions while diving. Rip Curls on the shores and sandy beaches for a month long vacation.
Bazaar’s too Bush Hunting for Elk and Black Tail Deer in the Pacific North West Region where I reside. Trail running and hiking; working in hospital using plaster-of-paris (which contains lime). And yet, the dial has literally not a scratch on its face. Not a glimmer of a hint of a scratch.
The ‘TRITIUM GAS TUBES’ are here to stay in the watch world. There is no doubt that any watch maker will discontinue using these wonderful little self sufficient gems for electrical lighting in this class of watch design. They are perfect in this class of design and function. Koodo’s M.T.M. -Well Done!
I take it that if the lighting makes you more visible on enemy radar; well then I guess you could just purchase a velcro-strap with a hoodie to go over the face of the watch if your worried about being spotted by your foe. Seriously, they claim 25 year life on the gas tubes? Darn! I guess I would be dead and gone by then mates. Kidding… I would just buy another and then be gone after it wears its self out. All this for under 1200.00 USD. Sold!
Accuracy in telling time:
This watch takes a lithium battery that lasts 10 years. Free from dial up’s……………. I’ll say that again for those of you who missed it: “-This watch takes a lithium battery that lasts 10 years”. Accuracy is mute.
I have two atomic clocks; one @ my residence and the other here @ hospital. Never have I ever lost a second during the testing phase that is still ongoing of this watches accuracy to tell proper time. I only change the date then set it once more. Pure simplicity!
Like I have said before in prior posts: With over 6,000 hours diving under my belt I see no need for the more expensive watch other than dimentional looks and pricing. Remember to keep in mind exactly what it is you are after in a watch before committing your dollars towards its purchase. Life is all too short and dollars are all too precious these day’s for many.
Choose wisely and until the next review… enjoy life to the extent of your imagination.
Nature
P.S. Thank you Documentally for your posting board. It has truly helped me with a fine purchase thus far! Good on you Mate. Trinidad & Tobago, Curtis
I purchased a Dark Warrior in black with steel band roughly 2 years back. The watch weighs 1/2 lb. and there is no mistaking that it is on your wrist. It’s built like an M1 Tank and to this day I cannot stop looking at it. I love the watch, but I use my atomic Casio Pathfinder to calibrate the time. It seems to run roughly 20 seconds slow per month. Overall, what a bad-ass rock solid all American watch.
I’m looking for a used Black Hawk-steel band with charger. Anybody out there have one for sale?
I put an email out there earlier without contact information. I am looking for a Black Hawk-steel band with a charger.
Email me at roywalters1@yahoo.com
Guess this is a bit late, I saw a question regarding why MTM switched from the awesome silicone oil filled casing to the helium. I think the reason for the switch is so the consumers can change the batteries easier. The oil filled casing required the customer to ship it back to MTM for battery replacements.
i want the black falcon velcro really bad I wish the black one is the same price as the silver… why is the black one $200 more?
price found on specialopswatch.com
go to http://www.roguewarriorwatches.com much better, less expensive! I love my red cell. The company ship all over the world. Very nice people

Don-t buy tyhe ruber strap, it will break very easily.
Anybody looking to sell a Titanium Black Warrior? If so I would definitely be interested. Shoot me an e-mail @ deinerwold@innovacresearch.com Thanks.
Just bought a used Blackhawk off Craigslist for $400.00. It will come with a metal bracelet. I don’t like metal bracelets so I ordered a rubber strap from the MTM website. Just saw the comment about don’t buy a rubber strap as they will break. Any more details as to what part of the strap fails? Also, will be selling the metal bracelet if anyone needs one for their MTM watch. perrychance@sunflower.com
Perry, I purchased a Black Warrior with velcro strap for Christmas 2009. The warrior is a heavy watch, but the wide adjustable velcro strap makes the watch comfortable to wear. I hardly notice the weight.
Thanks for the input on the velcro strap Han. I’ll see what the quality of the rubber strap is like when it arrives and if it seems fragile I can return it and get the velcro strap.
For all those looking for an MTM watch here is how I found mine. I started by looking at ebay and http://www.watchuseek.com. There were 4 different ones available on ebay, but not the exact one I was looking for. Several had recently sold on watchuseek so I had just missed them. I then Googled “MTM Craigslist” and found an out of state ad. Although it was an older ad, I thought I would contact the seller just in case the watch never sold. To my surprise I received a reply from the seller in less than 10 mintues, purchased the watch and it is currently in the mail. Good luck with you search.
I’m still looking for a used black Warrier w/metal band if anyone can help…Brent borerb@westinghouse.com
Perry, I don’t think that MTM allows returns on straps.
Brent, there is currently an MTM Warrior on eBay. It has a rubber strap, but I may be able to help you with a metal strap as I will be taking mine off when it arrives Monday. Last time I checked the bid was at $103.00.
MTM Blackhawk arrived in the mail in perfect condition. I put a brand new MTM rubber strap on it (style 2 with the knife etched into it) as I don’t like metal bracelets. I’ve owned a number of outdoor/military/dive watches and this one is hands down the most tactical/rugged looking watch I’ve seen. The light modes are impressive. Finally found the watch I’ve been looking for, for all these years.
If there is anyone looking for a good deal on a black warrior rubber strap watch NEVER used please feel

I am interested in a metal band for my silver falcon. Anyone looking to sell one or know an aftermarket band that will fit? Email me at twcampbell3@gmail.com.
I bought a black Vulture last year. I am a graduate of the SFQC. A friend suggested I look at this watch. Sure, I like its look and feel. I have a big wrist.
It took me a while to get used to the light function. I am not sure I really am. I think a Vulture with T-100 gas tubes would be better for a soldier in the field, quite frankly. I would also suggest a T-100 gas tube at the 12:00 position on the bezel. If they can’t do that, then perhaps a lume dot at that spot.
The white light function is too bright to use in a tactical mode. But it worked well enough when I dropped my glasses in the movie theater. I also used it once to add oil to my car at night on the side of the road. In a tactical setting, any NVG would see that light source like it was a search light. Even if you covered it up, the potential light leakage might still show up. I suppose most of you reading this won’t have this consideration to worry about. Still, since the company claims it has the design of Special Operations Forces in mind, I provide feedback for whatever that is worth.
In my humble opinion, the rescue blinking light function is also too bright for real world useage, unless it is a civilan emergency. Most any SF soldier would turn on an IR light for night operations. If I were hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail and broke my leg, or my car drove off the road, then that would be practical for the white lights. But I contend it is not a practical tactical light. On the other hand, perhaps some soldiers with whom they consulted thought it would be a great feature.
A really useful set of settings might be:
1. UV lighting. Timed setting. Already in the watch.
2. White lighting. Timed setting Already in the watch.
3. IR lighting. This to replace the blinking white light setting.
As I am not a watch designer, I don’t know if this is possible.
But the real issue I have with the watch is that the light switch, when you use it at all, is too delicate. I have only used it a few times. But it broke. To use it, you have to unscrew a tiny collar around the light button. This frees the switch. Then you depress the switch a few times to get the appropriate light setting. Then you have to screw the collar back in place to maintain water tightness after you are done. I don’t think I was rough with it.
The warranty card indicates one must use it gently or some such words. That might be something the watch maker should put on the facts about the watch on line as a prospective buyer considers the feature. But no words can truly describe how delicately one must actually handle this function. On my watch, the screw would not screw back into its thread.
For what it is worth, that kind of delicacy is not a good feature for a soldier in the field or for a watch that purports to support Special Operations Forces. So I sent the watch back for warranty repair. I still like the watch, but I would advise a user not to use the light function too often and certainly not when you are under duress. I would also add that this seems to be an inherent product defect.
Finally, the calendar has some sort of goofy 38 day wheels in the watch or something like that. At the end of each month you have to reset it by as many days as a week if you are in, for example, February.
Who designed that? A small and petty complaint I admit since one has to reset just about any watch calendar feature in many months, but it seems as though a 31 day wheel, like most watches have, would make more sense. Plus, last time I checked, there are seven months with 31 days. Thus, more than half the time you don’t have to reset most watch dates. Even a lunar calendar does not have as many days in a month as this watch suggests there are.
For $1,100, it seems like MTM could have contemplated this feature better. Maybe I don’t know about some capability it has and if so, I apologize and ask for some education.
On the MTM web site, under their gallery, I think they should show photos of real people using the watches they sell. Mostly they show actors or people who use these watches as vanity pieces. I thought it was a tool watch when I got it. But if they did that, who would buy a watch with a photo of a guy like me as an endorsement? As an ordinary guy, I have no name brand recognition!
I commend them for their warranty service. They will have it back to me inside of a week. That is much faster than I thought would happen. Kudos to MTM on the warranty work. I also think the staff is responsive when you call MTM. The ladies who take the call are very efficient, friendly, and courteous. I give them a salute!
Once I get the watch back, I will probably buy the neoprene strap. I have a large wrist, but I think the rubber strap is too thick even for my beefy arm. That is a vanity feature, not a problem with the watch.
Also looking for a metal strap, anyone wanting to sell one please let me know: banjaxt @ gmail.com.
My wife purchased a BlackHawk for my for our Anniversary this Jan. I had been searching and comparing watches for some time when I decided this was the brand and model for me. Like most others here, I was amazed with how massive this thing was. I am 6’1 and 250lbs so I need a bigger watch to fit my profile. This was perfect, and I could not be happier….for about a week, then the black finish started rubbing off the band. I emailed MTM and was treated very well (which I should be after dropping $600 on a watch). MTM emailed a return label and paid shipping charges both ways. It took about two weeks to get it back, and upon opening the package it was love at first sight (again). Two weeks later…same problem, the black finish started rubbing off again, I emailed customer service again because they were so helpful before, but this time was different. I had to play phone tag (I was the only one playing though) to try to reach someone. After two weeks of getting the run around, MTM offered to exchange my BlackHawk for a SilverHawk, which seemed reasonable to me, but they also wanted to keep the $145. difference. Maybe its just me, but something about that deal doesn’t seem right. After trying to get in touch with the manager (who is also the owner), and being told he was on lunch every time I called (different days different hours, and twice on the same days in 3 hour windows) I contacted the BBB, they basically told me they cant make MTM stand behind their warranty, so I was out of luck. I now own a $600 paperweight, that I’m embarrassed to show my friends. The morals of this story are 1) don’t let the ads fool you, they are NOT well built. 2)save your money and buy a different brand (or just not a black one) 3) if you still think this watch is for you, use an AMEX so at least they will help when you realize you wasted your money on a piece of crap.
Update as of 4/20/11 I have sold the metal bracelet for my MTM Blackhawk watch.
Had the Titanium Patriot for 3 weeks. they say this thing is “battle ready”..yea right. this thing wouldn’t make it in a kiddy pool. I was walking into the ocean, with water around my thigh a wave hits my wrist. pins come out, and watch falls off. never to be found again.
Customer service says there is nothing they can do. ridiculous.

I am looking to buy a Black patriot with a Velcro band.
Email me at Jpbutler256@gmail.com is someone is interested in selling one
Hey guys, I’m looking for a 1st gen black seal with the liquid filled case. I know they dont make them anymore but if someone maybe selling one please let me know.
Thanks
I have a black titanium Silencer watch which is now over 3 years old and still going strong the only problem I have found is the strap is looking a little tatty and worn now and the metal ones are very expensive to replace apart from that it has done exactly what it said on the tin.
If your looking for a reliable, accurate and chunky watch you won’t go far wrong with an MTM.
Hi anyone know where I can get my special ops repaired in the uk as they dont do it themselves and just get a run a round when calling all the main dealers
Did I buy my Black Seal because I thought it was the best watch on the market or the best priced watch compared to quality? No! I bought it because I thought it was the best looking watch, delivered in a cool case. And yes, it fulfils it’s duties. I am spending all days in an office and take a bath every night. It works excellent and it glows just fine when waking up in the middle of the night checking the time.
I worked as a customer service representative for a little over a year. First off, MTM sells anywhere from 20-50 watches a day (combining phone, online, and walk in orders). Who is there to fix customers problems you ask? Two young girls who also deal with online/phone/walk in orders, Returns/exchanges, emails, walk in customers, phone calls, payment processing, and review writing. The “manager” is also the watch technician and in charge of shipping/receiving.
I want to share the things I learned about MTM while working for them.
1. If you have an issue you will never speak to a manager EVER, mainly because there is no “manager”. You are most likely speaking to the other customer service representatives who say their name is stepanie, sally, or any other name that comes to mind.
2. If you have been having problems with your watch and you have sent it in for repair after 4 times in you’ve had enough you want to replace your watch, they will agree and send you the same watch, just clean it up a bit make it look nice. You will NOT get your money back if you have had your watch for over 10 days. PERIOD.
3. “Marketing Department” is ONE person. No she doesn’t write reviews making the company look good. Customer Service representives do that as well when there is down time. She is basically only the middle man when it comes to paying magazines for advertising, and calling trade shows to reserve a spot.
4. MTM was NOT made by ex-military personnel. It was made by a man called Yoav Casis aka Joe Cash. He started MTM as an israeli immigrant over 15 years ago. He had an excellent idea and a friend – Mike – helped him write a story and make all you believe these watches were designed by military personnel. He has been there from the beginning and now sleeps half of his shift and helps us write good reviews on sites like these, the other half of his shift.
5. MTM watches are NOT special ops watches, I have heard countless angry customers who say their target watches are far better. Yes, they have neat designs and neat specs, but definitely NOT for the price.
6. Customer service at MTM will be horrible until Yoav (owner) decides to hire more people, offer training, and not make us lie to every customer that calls in or walks through the door.
7. Biggest MTM watch problems:
-watch stopped working
-hands are loose/floating around
-screws are missing
-not keeping time
-numbers do not glow
Some of you may have an MTM watch and feel it is completely work it but I always wondered, what if they knew these parts are ordered from china they pay no more than $50 per watch and yet they sell that same watch for 1k. You people are helping MTM pay for advertising and helping them reel more people into buying “military watches”. If you are interested in getting an MTM watch, please call them, ask questions about their history and see for yourself.
No, I do not own an MTM watch, but I sold them and lied to people for a little over a year until I could not lie to people any longer. The reason I stayed for 1+ years is because I had to eat and I had rent to pay.
Just a fluff and really overpriced toys.
If you like the style of this toy please check with major China manufacturers,
Great Business Idea. Hire a good writer for a good story. And visit the great country of China to have better looking watches that you can claim as Patriot watches.
I am not promoting this site… But I just googled China Watches and found this: 🙂

Xmas is coming soon.
BEWARE – DO NOT BUY FROM MTM SPECIAL OPS WATCH!!! After mailing watch back 4 times and paying $200. In repairs, watch will still not keep hold its charge. It appears like its charging when placed on charger, but 5 minutes later it loses that charge. After dealing with the company for a year and out zlot of money, I still have a broken watch or charger… Extremely poor customer service. Rarely will you get past the two girls answering the phone. Finally got service manager Pepe/ Jose (his name changes) he tells me to plug the watch into a different outlet!!!!
